At Padma Yoga Shala🌿, we offer daily classes * of introduction to the first series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, respecting the tradition left by Śrī K. Pattabhi Jois and perpetuated by his family, R. Sharath Jois and Saraswathi Jois, in Mysore, India.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic yoga system codified and popularized by Śrī K. Pattabhi Jois (1915 - 2009) in Mysore, South India, where we progressively learn six series of postures (आसन āsana) in synchronization with a conscious breathing and fixation of the gaze at specific points (ट्टि dṛṣṭi).
The main characteristic of Ashtanga Yoga is Vinyasa (विन्यास vinyāsa) - conscious coordination between breathing, movements and postures wich creates internal heat, increases blood circulation and produces perspiration, initiating a process of physical and mental detoxification.
Classes taught in Padma Yoga Shala🌿 are an introduction to the first of the six Ashtanga Vinyasa series. Although this method is quite challenging, it can be adapted to any student regardless of age or physical condition.
There are two types of classes. Classes in Mysore Style are the traditional way of practicing Ashtanga Yoga. They are group lessons adapted to all people, regardless of the level of experience, where each student works at his own pace and is accompanied individually by the teacher. In the led classes, the students follow the rhythm indicated by the teacher who guides them through the traditional count of Vinyasas, in Sanskrit. Led classes are not advised for beginners, as some experience of the postures and the series is necessary to keep pace with the rhythm of the class.
